HD-DVD vs Blu-ray, the battle ends

Wednesday, March 05, 2008 - posted by Tom Mohamed

And the winner is?

With Toshiba announcing the end of production the cheaper HD-DVD format, the Blu-ray format has emerged as the winner.

This battle has been on going for about 2 years, with customers confused as to which DVD format to buy.

Why did Blu-ray win?

The main backer of the HD-DVD format wasToshiba,
with an impressive list of entertainment content companies including Paramount, Universal Studios and Warner Bros. Paramount and Universal announced their move to the Blu-ray format in late Feburary 2008 which effectively killed the HD-DVD format. Microsoft was also a backer for the HD-DVD format on their XBOX 360 console.

So what does this mean to me?

With the end of HD-DVD there is now one format for all to use, this war was similar to the Video age where the battle between VHS and Betamax took place.

This also means the end of the competition and the price of blu-ray DVD's and players will now increase in price.
