A few years ago a computer could connect to the Internet, without Service Packs or anti-virus software and not become infected with viruses or hacking software for many months.
These days if you don't have a Service Pack, patch updates or anti-virus software; your PC can be infected within a few minutes of connecting to the Internet. With increasing broadband usage, internet users and technological advancement it has become easier for hackers, spammers and viruses to get through to your system.
What can you do to protect yourself?Never connect a new PC to the Internet until you have at least some anti-virus software with a firewall (to protect incoming and outgoing traffic). Windows XP SP2 has built in firewall software which works well, however anti-virus software is needed to compliment SP2 to enhance security on your PC.
Norton Internet Security 2005 (NIS 2005) is one such product that integrates well with Windows XP SP2. Not only do you get virus protection, but also Internet protection from unauthorised systems accessing your PC. NIS 2005 provides you with 12 month subscription with your purchase for constant virus updates.Other great products like, Trend Micro, VET, and Sophos offer similar features and security.
